Pick Your Poison: 3 Reasons Why I Write on Post - It's

Lovers of words,

In a perfect world, the one I envision, all writers would write on post-it's. For those of you that don't know me or my work (don't worry you'll catch a video in the next post), I start 90% of my poems on Post-It's. Who would have thought that the science of Dr. Spencer Silver of 3M back in 1968 and my prose would blend so well together, it's like ice cream and apple pie--delish! I will attempt to explain this attraction to Post-It's but first I'd like to help the reader that's just starting the writing thing and often finds themselves troubled with the commitment that comes from traditional journal writing.

The journal can be a block to the unconventional writer. Let's be real with this journal writing is something you were forced to do in school, it's connected to assignments and it's not as "free" as writing should be, often the journal is returned to a teacher who then leaves a mark of quality based on your work that would range from ABCDF or maybe a point system or simply the dreaded check mark.

1. There is nearly 66 lines and a margin on notebook paper.
2. The margin is red and red is synonomous with danger.
3. Journals are large in size and belong in bookbags.

In my experience I've found the journal to be intimidating and if you agree with points 1-3 then you are much like the unconventional writer. Now how do you find the "thing" that makes you want to write? Simple, grab a writing instrument of your choice and write on everything, literally. If you're reading this at work, survey your work station or office I bet you'll find a Post-It or maybe a business card from a contact you don't want to contact. Try napkins at the dinner table or maybe you're the handsfree type, speak into your cellphone's voice recorder, whatever your flavor try it out, the search for your medium might even make a great poem!

3 Reasons Why I Write on Post-It's:

1. Size Does Matter: Post-It's are small, often without lines and easy to carry in my pocket!

2. Accessibility: I can find them all around the office so they are often free to me! I mean really I'm no secretary so I don't take messages but the gig keeps supplying them to me almost like they expect me to write on them.

3. Easy to Dispose: If I start a piece and its not jelling like it should I can just crumble it in the palm of my hand and practice my jump shot!

I should not say I chose Post-It's, I believe Post-It's chose me!

Until we write again,
